Many of the dogs Arizona Golden Rescue accepts cannot be immediately placed with an adopting family because they require veterinary care and/or training to make them more likely to find a lifelong home with a loving family. AGR spends, on average, $2,000 per dog (as of 2023) accepted into our Rescue program. Our adoption fee does not come close to covering the cost of getting a dog ready for placement. We have a special program called the Debbe Begley Memorial Fund after our co-founder, Debbe Begley, who passed away from cancer in 2011. This fund is drawn upon to pay for veterinary expenses of dogs that come into Rescue with cancer or for extraordinary medical expenses over $5,000 for any dog -- the amount over $5,000 is taken from this fund.
