14-066 Chip and his brother 14-067 Scout , another very bonded pair, were relinquished to us by owners who had recently moved to Arizona from Missouri. There, the dogs had been living outside in a large yard. Here, they were now relegated to a postage stamp-size area. The dogs were having to be kept outside as the toddler in the family was allergic to them. The boys were only 2½ years old, had been purchased at six weeks of age, and then lived outdoors until now. Both dogs were fostered by the AGR President for a week so we could get a handle on their behavior. As you might expect, although very sweet they were completely untrained and not housebroken. They learned quickly to “go out” , and she gave each some basic leash training. Then they were sent to Partners Dog Training School for some serious training. Because the boys seemed to be inordinately attached to each other – to the point that Chip would froth at the mouth out of anxiety if Scout went out of sight – we requested that they be gradually separated at Partners. After only 11 days there, Chip had to leave, as he developed a severe infection on his nose and in his foot, because he kept trying to get out of his chain link kennel run so he could be with his brother. After an overnight stay at an emergency vet, Chip went home with Deb to convalesce, and, while there, seemed to come to terms with not being around Scout. He interacted with Deb’s canine gang well and kept Bubba company in Deb’s laundry room when Bubba visited for a week. After three weeks at Partners, Scout was adopted very quickly. Deb interviewed several families for Chip and did not find the “just right” match for him. We contacted Scout’s new owners to see if they would consider taking Chip, too, and sure enough they wanted him! So, the brothers ended up back together, which is evidently what was meant to be. The adoptive family with two active sons are now the proud guardians of two young, active and happy Golden Retrievers! The whole family adores their canine boys!
